Russell Coulson has been a professional artist for over thirty years. In all that time he has not exhibited, his art has been bought by private buyers. The work ranges from colourful landscapes, dynamic abstracts and portraits. He is exhibiting for the first time at Wingfield Barns from Friday 3rd September to Saturday 18th September 2010. 

Entry is free and original works and prints will be on sale. 

Russell is a remarkable artist. He has a tremendous talent as a draughtsman. He expresses himself by drawing. Most people take it for granted that they can write words on paper. For Russell drawing is his handwriting. It just flows. His portraits create a true likeness of the subject, amplified with a strong graphic treatment. There will be several celebrity portraits in the show.

He is equally unusual in his landscape painting. His natural skill with composition (or design) combined with a colour palette that is joyous, makes his work stand out from the crowd. The work ranges from bold graphic images to subtle textured details that evoke the mood of place in a unique style.

His abstract work covers the spectrum from figurative to shape and pattern. Again the underlying structure comes from his keen eye for the balance of elements. The colour palette goes from strident to monochromatic. 

The ability to draw has always been the bedrock that underlies true quality in the visual arts. Sadly it is not always to be seen, but when it is there it shows.

Workshops

Russell will hold workshops between the 6th to the 12th September. If you would like to take part, please bring along an A3 sketch pad with 300gsm paper (suitable for taking watercolour) and some Caran D'Ache soluble water colour crayons and Caran D'Ache soluble pencils.

The cost is £25 per person for a two hour session. Russell will teach the technique of water colour or pencil drawing using these materials.
