Art & Exhibitions - what you may have missed...

Sherie Brinkley

Picture
Beyond the Weather

Sherie is a contemporary landscape artist who explores the expressive qualities of mixed media to create atmospheric landscapes, reminiscent of a place or moment in time. The connection between human and the natural world is the underlying theme of her work. Sherie strives to portray the unique freedom of wild places, in a civilisation where the countryside is constantly being urbanised and wild places are under threat.

From her Suffolk studio, Sherie works from sketches, photographs and memory of her visits to wild places. The canvases evolve as she works on them, the media itself becoming a fundamental part of an organic process in dictating what the painting becomes. Sherie searches for this sense of “wild” in her locality. The elements are her primary inspiration in her portrayal of Suffolk.

“My paintings pay homage to nature and the wild places that I love; places where I feel humble and to simply exist gives one a sense of belonging and a connection with the earth. Modern life increasingly dictates every element of our lives; my paintings are an escapism.”

The exhibition will be open Monday - Saturday from 13th October to 15th November, 10am to 3pm, but closed on 1st November.

The Private View is on Wednesday 15th October 6-8pm. If you would like to attend, please email
office.manager@wingfieldbarns.co.uk or call 01379 384505.

Free admission.

Fragmented Landscapes

Please note that the exhibition is closed on Saturday 13th September.

My work is a combination of process and concept. Paint and ink are worked into paper allowed to dry then cut into squares. Each square is unique and cut randomly. The image is then allowed to gradually evolve through the process of applying one square at a time. The squares are not predetermined; each square is selected and placed as the painting progresses. Changes occur that can surprise and frustrate, forcing me to constantly make decisions about what direction to take next.

The paintings are intended to allude to landscape and natural shapes that occur within the landscape. They are perhaps best described as being an abstraction of the idea of the landscape. I take reference points from flint and stones that lie scattered on the edge of the fields and beaches. I take inspiration from the close up elements of our landscape that is so often ignored when walking, looking at the ground rather than the horizon.

I invite the viewer to see the paintings from a distance and close up. The landscape-like qualities can clearly be perceived from a distance but up close, each square reveals their depth and subtle tonal variances. I want the paintings to be viewed as a landscape with you looking and finding your own reference points.

As artists and viewers we all bring something different to each painting and will all have different viewing experiences. What one person sees will differ to the next. Whatever you bring and take from these works, I hope they make you think about what you see. It may be positive or negative, any reaction is better than no reaction!

I have been juggling my art with my professional work as an architectural designer over the past 30 years. I’m a member of the artist’s community at The Art Station Studios in Saxmundham.

The exhibition will be open Monday - Saturday from 5th September to 4th October, 10am to 3pm.

Free admission.

Dod Hamilton & Jack Heydon

Picture
Photographic Exhibition

The photographers are Dod Hamilton and Jack Heydon, and are both from East Anglia.  They have been taking photos for many years.

Jack is also a film maker, and has shown work at the Glasgow Film festival.

Dod Hamilton’s Dialectics marks the culmination of a decades-long engagement with photography. While occasional instances of colour punctuate the series, they function sparingly and intentionally, heightening rather than diverting from the central dialogue between pure black and pure white.

The exhibition will be open in Gallery 1 every day from 13th August to 31st August, 10am to 4pm.

It is adjacent to the International Mini Prints Show in Gallery 2.

Free admission.

The Beauty in the Everyday

Kay Edwards paints the world through her figurative lens, often using objects from everyday life to spark inspiration.

She turns the mundane into captivating scenes, inviting the viewer to question the wider picture. Her work is distinctive for layers of colour.

Studying both the domestic sphere and the natural world, Edward’s explores themes of belonging, set in the Suffolk landscape.

Showing in Gallery 1 & 2 at Wingfield Barns, Church Road, Wingfield, IP21 5RA

Tom Palmer is a local Suffolk sculptor working in limestone, slate, marble 5and alabaster. He loves to develop each piece by exploiting the fault lines and shapes that appear to him in the stone. Tactile polished surfaces contrast with the natural surface texture of the stone which when combined with the light shining on and through the work create reflections and shadows that give an added dimension. Tom's sculptures are direct carved working in harmony with the natural colour and texture of the stone to create unique pieces.

Patricia Lomax has exhibited widely across both Europe and USA including New York, Florida,  Santa Barbara, Rotterdam, Paris, and Hamburg and in Puglia (Italy)  as well as London and many counties across the UK.
She says, "Nowadays I only show my work locally and continue to make art in my Suffolk studio. For many years I have taught private students in both my Suffolk and Devon studios as well as contributing to art experience in local schools and colleges.  I usually work in acrylics for the spontaneity and freedom it affords me and I now have a large collection of work which has built up over the years in all sizes from 5ft square to little 6inch greeting cards. My space is available to visit all year round, by appointment, and I am always happy to talk art to anyone that cares to call."

My name is Debbie Phillips and live in Suffolk. I love painting and oil is my favourite although some pieces are in acrylic.
The sky is always changing and moving so have tried to replicate what I see. With the landscape paintings they come from my live and what I have seen, and family.
I now live in a little village surrounded by countryside and fields, where it is quite which gives me time to contemplate and give in to my inner self when painting.
I have completed nearly a year of a degree, and some of my work is now being used for teaching and advertising by the Open College of the Arts.

Bridget Palmer is an artist working in oils, acrylics and watercolour. She is a self taught artist living in Suffolk, UK. She works out of her shepherd hut studio at her home, selling and exhibiting paintings both from her studio and from local exhibitions around Suffolk.
Bridget's work reflects her passion for contemporary painting. Her use of bold colour and sweeping brush strokes in all her paintings, make her work energetic and very distinctive.
Bridget's work shows a response to an ongoing narrative between her and the painting as it slowly reveals itself, no formal plan is made, so the joy and freedom of creating remains the main focus. Always looking for balance, she pushes and pulls the paint, playing to her strengths and immersed in the drama of creating. Her compositional choice is heavily influenced by both the land and cloudscapes from her studio viewpoint and the relationship between the land and sky.

Laura Such
Blue Tits

Laura Such is an award-winning emerging artist based in Southwold, Suffolk. In 2021 she was a Finalist for the National Sculpture Prize, judged by esteemed artists including Gavin Turk and Polly Morgan. In January 2022 she was Artist In Residence at The Art Station, Saxmundham, Suffolk where she was mentored by well respected artists such as Clare Palmier, Director of the Art Station, and the infamous Suffolk sculptor Laurence Edwards. In July 2022 she was one of four Artists In Residence at Nectar in rural Catalunya, Spain which culminated in an exhibition at Espronceda, Barcelona as part of the Art Nou festival in the city.

This installation consists of Blue Tits cast from male and female volunteers. Primary themes are around censorship, liberation, and loss.

Many of the casts have been warped to give a sense of tactility that is at once tantalising and disturbing. By abstracting the breast from the body we’re asked to question the role and power of the breast and its sexual objectification.

An interesting evolution of this installation is the discovery that breast cancer patients often have blue dye injected into their lymph nodes, as a way of checking whether the cancerous cells are present.

Out of the Nest

We are four printmakers from Cuckoo Farm Print Workshop, Colchester, Essex. We work in a variety of mediums although there is an onus on etching, either on metal or acrylic sheets. Our work is mainly representational although both surrealism and symbolism creep in.  We mainly show work with the 12 Printmakers group and exhibit once a year at Snape Maltings with other members of Cuckoo Farm Print Workshop.

An exhibition of new works by Artbox artists remembering their friend Mark Sheridan who lived at Prospect Cottage in Wingfield.

Artbox is a Community Interest Company which provides art sessions for adults (16+) with special needs.  We are based in Chediston, near Halesworth, with spacious studio space set in beautiful surroundings.

This exhibition has been made possible by a generous donation from Mark’s family and we hope to make it a regular feature of the Artbox calendar.  Mark came to Artbox three times a week for over twelve years; it was described by his cousin as Mark’s ‘happy place’.
He was the life and soul of any gathering and as a long term resident of Wingfield it seems fitting that this exhibition should be held here at Wingfield Barns.  All proceeds from the exhibition will go towards funding future shows in Mark’s memory by the Artbox artists.

Artbox is a not-for-profit organisation set up to provide daytime creative art workshops for adults 16+ with special needs in the Waveney area of Suffolk. The sessions are facilitated by artist Helen Murray and her team at our large well equipped studio at The House on The Hill Chediston, near Halesworth

Our aim is to encourage art as an activity beneficial to mental health and well-being and to enable opportunities for our artists (Artboxers) to make, exhibit and sell their work. We are committed to providing new opportunities for the Artboxers, helping to develop their confidence and self esteem.

Keith Judge

"Although I was born in London, I have spent most of my life living and working in East Anglia. I originally studied painting and illustration at Colchester School of Art before going on to do Photography and Film at the Royal College of Art. After a career in the Film and TV industry, I returned to painting full time which had always been my main passion. Like many East Anglian artists, I became inspired by the unique and challenging qualities of the Norfolk and Suffolk coastlines. In particular Covehithe beach, and the cliffs at Happisburgh and Holkham beach in Norfolk."

Keith will be exhibiting his work in Gallery 2 from Saturday 26th June to Sunday 11th July, open Wednesday to Sunday, 11am to 4pm.

Suitable for both beginners and those with some experience. The workshop fee includes all tools and materials, you just need to bring an apron or old shirt to protect your clothing.
